The 'heart attack specialists' were at it again today giving their supporters the scare of their life by going down 2-0 to a young and enthusiastic Forrestfield side away at Hartfield Park.

It could have been different, however, if the referee had not blown for a foul on the keeper as Mandurah scored in the first five minutes. This was the first of a few contentious decisions that benefitted the home side although Mandurah have had a good season with regards to refereeing decisions in the main so we cannot complain too loudly. Forrestfield took advantage of their reprieve and set about destroying Mandurah's makeshift defence which was once again without the services of regulars James Hesketh and Stuart Francis. Forrestfield scored their first from a corner which really should have been cleared whilst the second was poked home from close range in the "Graham Matthews style'. 2-0 down with 20 minutes gone and Mandurah started to force their way back into the game. Playing some neat football Mandurah pressurised the Forrestfield goal for the remainder of the half. There were a couple of half chances although some of us must have felt in our hearts that this was not to be Mandurah's day.

After a rousing team talk at the break Mandurah came out determined to force their way back into the game and did so immediately as Jeff Bright's cross was flicked on by Jordy Rhodes into the path of Jake Loreto. Loreto forced his way in front of the Forrestfield keeper and chested the ball into the unguarded net.

Mandurah upped the pressure at this point however Forrestfield were very compact making it difficult for Mandurah to penetrate. Mandurah were once again denied a goal as the linesman flagged Michael Bobridge offside as he benefitted from a touch by a Forrestfield defender. Once again a very close call with Mandurah not getting any luck. Mandurah did equalise midway through the half by a familiar method. A long freekick from Halpin was met in the goalmouth by Bobridge whose header fell to the very aware Christian Paschkewitz who made no mistake with his header.

At 2-2 Forrestfield could have been forgiven for dropping their heads but quite the opposite was true. The home side had 5 - 10 minutes of sustained pressure with only an excellent save from Mandurah keeper, Michael Green, and a bit of bad luck for Forrestfield in front of goal keeping Mandurah level. In the final 10 minutes the game swung back Mandurah's way as their pressure began to tell on Forrestfield's young team. Jake Loreto popped up to put the Dolphins ahead as he benefitted from a fine run and cross by captain Andy Brown. Brown was at the centre of Mandurah's fourth soon after as his cheeky nutmeg and cross set up Jeff Bright for a superb headed finish and a quality celebration right in front of the camera. Graham Matthews who had once again performed superbly for Mandurah made the final goal as his cross was turned into his own net by a Forrestfield defender.

Rockingham City - Ashfield 1:3 (0:1)

Goals: 0:1 Rydeen Botha (3.); 0:2 Martin Kelly; 1:2 Michael Vaz (Penalty, 80.); 1:3 Michael D'Silva (87.)

Second-placed Ashfield accounted for cellar dweller Rockingham City 3-1 at Dowling Street Reserve. Slick passing by the visiting side gave them the advantage after 3 minutes as Rydeen Botha stroked in an Andy O’Neill cross to the far post. Ashfield deservedly increased their lead when good approach work by Julian Piromalli ended with a scorching 30-metre volley from Martin Kelly which beating the goalkeeper. The same pattern continued after the break as Rockingham continually found themselves chasing the ball but remained in the game as Ashfield failed to capitalise on their dominance. Martin Kelly squandered a guilt-edged opportunity from directly in front, and Botha forgot to stretch his leg with an open goal at his mercy. The home side were handed a lifeline in the form of a 80th minute penalty which Michael Vaz calmly slotted in to reduce the deficit. This re-energised Rockingham who stepped up the pace and went close to levelling on several occasions. But the game was put beyond their reach when Ashfield demonstrated their superiority and Micheal D’Silva scored their third of the afternoon with only a few minutes left on the clock

South West Phoenix - Canning City 4:0 (1:0)

Goals: 1:0 Gary Mayers; 2:0 Steve Suttie; 3:0 Steve Suttie; 4:0 Steve Suttie

South West Phoenix moved into third place after thrashing Canning City 4-0 at the Soccerdrome. All the early enterprise came from the visiting side who maintained possession for long periods and created several good chances which included Mick Van Dongen’s shot from 15-metres that hit the post. Phoenix hit the front completely against the run of play when Steve Suttie delivered a far post cross which David Murphy neatly laid back for Gary Mayers to tuck inside the bottom corner. Going a goal down certainly surprised Canning but they were far from disheartened as Daniel Trevisol, Ross Posthuma and Dave Mickler continually speared them into attack in search of what would have been a deserved equaliser. The second half was a completely different story with Phoenix piling on a trio of unanswered goals. Greg Hayes provided the ammunition in the 50th minute via a low ball through the area which Suttie turned in from 7-metres. The game was ended as a contest eight minutes later when Hayes delivered a cross to Mayers whose header rebounded off the crossbar and Suttie who made no mistake with the follow-up. The icing on the cake arrived with fifteen minutes to play as Ryan Risdon squirted a pass to Murphy who transferred possession to Suttie who brilliantly evaded his marker to fire in from 10-metres.

Queens Park - Dianella White Eagles 1:3 (0:0)

Goals: 0:1 Dragan Njegic (48.); 0:2 Jon Greenwood (Penalty, 63.); 0:3 Jon Greenwood (75.); 1:3 Ian McKean (90+2.)

Dianella White Eagles were forced to work hard in a 3-1 away victory over Queens Park in the Football West State First Division at Coker Park. It was Dianella who had the first good opportunity when lethal striker Jon Greenwood played in Mladin Gligorski who crossed to Dragan Njegic who was steaming into the box, but the White Eagles captain shot narrowly wide. Youngster Carlos Jogee, who was making his first team debut in the match, missed a golden chance in the 25th minute for Queens Park; Jogee shot powerfully from fifteen yards straight at Dianella ‘keeper Pedro Pavez. Pavez couldn’t hold onto the shot however, spilling it straight to Jogee but the young attacker shot horribly over from six yards. After Paul Hickey had his shot well saved in the 35th minute, Queens Park were unlucky not to take the lead on the stroke of halftime. Ricky Simpson crossed from the right wing towards Jimmy Taneski, who acrobatically jumped feet-first towards the ball and shot it on the volley with his body in midair. Taneski’s shot appeared to have the ‘keeper beaten but the ball cannoned into the crossbar and was cleared.

The visitors took the lead three minutes after the break through Njegic. After the ball was played to him on fifteen yards the veteran midfielder managed to turn his defender and place the ball perfectly inside the upright, leaving Queens Park goalkeeper Brendan Symonds with no chance. Dianella were awarded a penalty in the 63rd minute when Gligorski’s cross was handballed by one of the Queens Park defenders. Greenwood stepped up to take the spot-kick and made no mistake, sending Symonds the wrong way and scoring into the top left corner. The White Eagles second half onslaught continued as they added a third through Greenwood who is the Leagues’ leading scorer. The ball was played to Njegic on six yards who unselfishly passed across to Greenwood who tapped in from three yards. Greenwood had a good chance to secure a hat-trick in the 85th minute. The pesky attacker was played in-behind but shot wide from eighteen yards after seeming certain to score. Queens Park earned a consolation goal two minutes into stoppage time through the penalty spot. After defender Aaron Moschopolos had handballed as Taneski tried to flick the ball past him, Queens Park captain Ian McKean stepped up on took the penalty and did so superbly, sending it into the bottom corner past an unlucky Pavez.

The loss was Queens Park’s fourth successive defeat, whilst Dianella have now won their last three matches and certain to finish in the top half of the Football West First Division table.
